The Opportunity
At Dyrt, we’re revolutionizing how businesses tackle food waste and organics recycling. From our state-of-the-art in-vessel aerobic composting facility just south of Downtown LA, our small but mighty team is building tools for businesses to better understand their waste streams and diverting millions of pounds of waste from landfills.
We’re looking for a passionate creator who can toggle between development and product thinking as we build tools that help to scale our operation and our environmental impact. As an intern, you’ll be a key contributor tackling real-world problems with tangible outcomes, not just debugging code, writing tests, or doing busywork. Join us in charting a path to end landfills while developing versatile skills that will set you apart in your future career.
What Makes Us Different
While your classmates tune features at big tech companies, you’ll be building complete solutions from the ground up. One day you might be training our Dyrty Vision contamination detection model, the next you could be reimagining how our customers visualize their environmental impact. This is a chance to own meaningful projects from concept to implementation, working directly with our head of product and lead engineer.
A Day In The Life
- Morning standup with our small, focused team
- Pair programming with our lead developer on new application features
- Lunch with warehouse staff to understand their workflow challenges
- Afternoon working on your summer project – something you’ve proposed that aligns with our goals
- End-of-day check-in with our CEO on product direction
The Skills You’ll Develop
- Full-stack development with our React/TypeScript and Supabase postgres stack
- Product thinking through direct user research with our operations team
- UX/UI design and data visualization to translate complex metrics into actionable insights
- Computer vision and ML model training with our Dyrty Vision system
- Android development for field tools and operator workflows
- Practical sustainability knowledge in waste management operations
The Ideal Candidate
- Is a creator at heart, demonstrated through a portfolio of hands-on work, academic, personal, or collaborative
- Experienced across the full stack, with skills in frontend frameworks and relational database design (React, Supabase, or PostgreSQL a plus)
- Has experience with or a strong interest in Android app development
- Has worked on or wants to work on full-stack vision projects, from sourcing datasets to deploying in the cloud
- Excited about automation and AI/ML applications in sustainability
- Naturally identifies friction points in user experiences and thinks critically about how to improve them
- Curious about sustainability and waste management challenges
- Motivated to see their work lead to real-world environmental impact
- Comfortable with ambiguity and ready to wear multiple hats
The Details
- Based at our warehouse south of downtown LA
- 3 days on-site weekly (flexible on which days)
- $20 – $30 an hour
- 10-week program (June-August 2025)
- Weekly team lunches and sustainability field trips
- Occasional perks through our venue partners
- Potential for continued part-time work or future full-time role
- Opportunity to present your project to our investors at summer demo day
Why Choose This Path
This summer could be about adding another bullet point to your resume, or it could be about building something meaningful that demonstrates both your technical ability and product intuition (while still adding another bullet point to your resume). At Dyrt, you’ll have creative freedom, direct mentorship from our head of product and CEO, and the satisfaction of seeing your work translate to measurable environmental impact within days, not months.
You’ll leave with portfolio-worthy projects, hands-on ML/computer vision experience, firsthand experience in a fast-growing sustainability startup, and skills that span both engineering and product development.
